My Day as a Broadcaster

As a sports fan, we often do not pay attention to who is broadcasting the game. The main reason we watch a sporting event or sit in our recliner is because we simply want to know who won or lost in a game. When I watch games with my family I never focus on who won or lost. I actually focus on the broadcasting crew.

Broadcasting is something I have been fascinated with since I was an eight year old kid just learning how to put complete sentences together. Whether it was watching Jim Nantz narrate the final round of The Masters Tournament or Ken Korach using his famous phrase, “The lights have taken full effect,” during an Oakland Athletics night game. The storytelling aspect is important in any sports game you watch.

I waited 14 years to put on a headset and be able to tell a story on the field. I got my chance on Valentine’s Day as I called San Jose State baseball as they took on the Santa Clara Broncos. This game was special because it was Opening Night for both teams looking to stand out in a crowded college baseball landscape in the Bay Area.

You always get goosebumps every time you decide to tackle your dreams for the first time. I was fortunate enough to have a true professional in my partner Ryan Carlson. Ryan is one of the nicest dudes on the planet. He is very experienced as a play by play broadcaster as he has called numerous SJSU athletic events. His signature catchphrase, “Oh Baby,” might describe his passion for the sport he is calling. He recently got hired to broadcast the Bellingham Bellls short season collegiate baseball team in Bellingham, Washington. I was in great hands indeed. Our partnership was like Vin Scully & Jon Miller.

Do not worry, the broadcast is on my SoundCloud page. SJSU would end up losing opening night to Santa Clara with a 7-3 heart breaker. However, it did not matter how the game ended. The childhood dream came true for one night. The eight year old kid would be happy that I accomplished this dream. There is no such thing as a perfect broadcast but if you are doing this to prove your supporters right then that is all you need to worry about.
