I could have written about myself. I could have written about my colleague Ryan Carlson. But, professionally Jim Nantz is the gold standard of what a sports broadcaster looks and feels like.
He is part of what makes the Masters Tournament one of the greatest sporting events of the calendar.
He calls the NFL, NCAA March Madness Tournament and the PGA Tour which includes the Master’s Tournament and the PGA Championship.
One of my favorite calls of that I heard was when Tiger Woods completed his comeback by winning the Masters last year. If this moment does not move you in any way than you are not human.
He has worked at CBS Sports for 35 years. Being at one network or at any job for that long anymore. Most announcers are motivated by the money or how long the contract is. For Jim Nantz, this is his dream job working for the network that made him love sports.
He always is welcoming to the audience at home and makes every game he does a big deal. He lives in Pebble Beach which is right down the road from me so this has a local connection.
When you hear Hello Friends to start off a broadcast, you know it is a big-time sporting event. Here is to hoping we can return to live sporting events.
